Located near the family-friendly beach of Choeng Mon, Samui Football Golf makes for a great family daytrip, or a good outing for a group of competitive friends, too. Exercise routines are often forgotten when on holiday, so this is a way to get the blood flowing without hitting the treadmill, and makes a pleasant alternative to Samui’s beautiful beaches.
Set amid a coconut grove, the fairways and greens offer a fair amount of shade, but an early morning or late afternoon start would still be recommended. Basically, the regular golf rules apply, but you won’t find all the fuss and pomp that often accompanies a golf country club. There’s no dress code here – some get dressed up in golf gear, and others play in shorts and flip flops, or even barefoot. Instead of using clubs, a football is kicked from hole to hole. Balls are provided, so no kit is required.
On the day of our visit, the clientele was mixed. A French father was showing his son how to do it, but after the first two holes, the 12-year old was showing dad who was boss, kicking with accuracy. A Korean group was taking the game quite seriously, all kitted out in team colours, gloves, golf shoes and peaks. A scoreboard listing countries adds a sense friendly rivalry, updating the latest players’ scores next to the appropriate nation.
Coconaldo, a giant statue of a player constructed of coconuts, marks the entrance and sets the cheery mood. The grounds of the 18-hole, par 66 course are well maintained, and the course is easy to follow. The clubhouse sells drinks at reasonable prices, as well as winners’ T-shirts for 250 baht.
On the downside, a game is not cheap. At 650 baht per adult, and 300 baht per child (with a free softdrink included) for 18 holes, this is not an economical outing for a family of four. However, a second round on the same day is discounted to half price for those wanting a rematch.
