Pleiku

Getting there and away

Air

Pleiku's airport is 10km north of the city on road 17.3, offering service to Saigon and Hanoi. A taxi to the airport should be about 60,000 VND by the meter. We've found that airfares to major cities can sometimes be cheaper than you'd expect and will save a lot of bus time.

    Bus

There's an impressive new bus station about 5km south of the city centre. To get there, take Hung Vuong south across the bridge where it turns into Truong Chinh Rd. The left turn that leads to the station is clearly marked with a sign that says Ben Xe (bus station). Three independent companies have ticket booths at the station, but they offer similar prices and services. There's also an ATMhere. Minibuses from Kon Tum drop off at the intersection of Hung Vuong and Le Loi, near the Hung Vuong Hotel, before heading to the bus station.

    Sample destinations include:

Da Lat Departs at 06:15 and 20:00. Costs 98,000 VND and takes about 15 hours.
Dak Lak Departs at 08:00, 09:00, then hourly between 12:30 to 16:30. Costs 33,000 VND and takes about 15 hours.

Saigon Departs frequently between 06:00 and 20:45. Costs 115,000 to 125,000 VND and takes about 12 hours.
Vinh Departs at 15:00. Costs 162,000 to 210,000 VND.

      Getting Around

There are plenty of motorcycle taxis for trips around Pleiku town, though overcharging of westerners is common. It's cheaper to rent a scooter yourself from the Thanh Lich Hotel, or anywhere else you can find that does it, for 10,000 to 15,000 VND per hour. Though we did find that on the motorcycle rental front as well, many operators quote extortionate prices. There's a small fleet of clean, new, metered taxis with crisply uniformed drivers who are tightly supervised by local authorities to ensure that tourists don't get taken: even if you're not a taxi budget, Pleiku is a good place to make an exception. For groups of two or more, they are often cheaper than flagging down a couple of motorcycle taxis.
