Getting There and Away

Bus

Lai Chau's bus station is just under a kilometre from the centre of town, along the road towards Sapa, on the left. Buses to Lao Cai are the most frequent departure, and stop in Sapa along the way. Buses to Thai Binh stop in Hanoi. There isn't much leaving after 14:00, so after that you'll have to try to flag something down along the road.

Dien Bien Phu: 5 departures between 05:00 and 12:00, costing 82,000, two extra departures at 07:00 and 13:00 (1st class bus), costing 95,000 and taking 6 hours.
Hanoi: departs at 05:00, costing 185,000 and taking 12 hours. Runs only on odd days according to the lunar calendar.
Lao Cai: 10 departures between 07:00 and 14:00, costing 45,000 and taking 4 hours.
Muong Lay: Take bus to Dien Bien Phu, costs 43,000 and takes 3 hours.
Muong Te: departs at 05:00 and 06:00, costing 80,000 and taking 7 hours.
Sinh Ho: departs at 05:30 and 07:00, costing 25,000 and taking 1.5 hours.
Thai Binh: departs at 05:30, costing 185,000 and taking 15 hours. Runs only on even days according to the lunar calendar.
