Getting there and away
If you're not on a tour, minibuses to Bac Ha can be picked up at Lao Cai's bus station, across from the train station. Departures are supposedly at 06:30, 07:00, 12:00, 13:00 and 15:00, but our experience suggests that these are very approximate times.
If coming from Lao Cai we suggest arriving around 12:00 to ensure you manage to get an onward bus, as we heard the 15:00 doesn't always run. Cost 60,000 VND, 2 hours. Getting to Lao Cai from Sapa is easy — just wait for a minibus in front of the church — 50,000 VND, takes an hour.
Buses back to Lao Cai, which is where most visitors head, leave from outside the temple early morning and afternoon or speak to your hotel – if you're staying at one of the tourist oriented places -- or Mr Nghe at Green Sapa tour who will likely be able to arrange a pick up.
If you're headed anywhere else, you'll have to sort out what road to stand on and wave something down. Buses to Simaxai drop off at the Can Cau market on Saturday mornings.
Lao Cai: leaves at 06:00, 07:00, 08:00, 12:00, 13:00 and costs 60,000, taking 2 hours
