Where to stay in Myawaddy

Myawaddy doesn’t offer a huge choice of accommodation, and while there are some excellent options, such as River View Guesthouse, Shwe Wut Hlwar Motel and Myawaddy Hotel, the first two no longer accept foreign guests. A few other spots lie down residential back streets, plus a couple of fancier options heading out of town are on the way.

Myawaddy is just as close, if not closer, to Mae Sot bus station than Mae Sot town. So if you have to spend a night at the border while awaiting onward travel, the Burmese side is just as practical as the Thai. Myawaddy’s hotel rates are much closer to Thai ones than those you’ll come across further upcountry in Burma, so maybe make the most of them while you can.

The small town of Kawkareik, on the road to Hpa-an, has a couple of guesthouses, but otherwise Myawaddy is the only town in the state outside of the capital Hpa-an to have accommodation licensed to have foreigners stay — at least that we could find as of mid-2016.

Rooms are on the top four floors, with reception and a restaurant taking up the ground floors of the two wings. As there is no lift, rooms on the fourth... Read our full review of Myawaddy Hotel.

One of several hotels found in the residential streets to the north of Bayintnuang Street, Ngwe Setkar offers the cheapest rooms we came across in Myawaddy. The location is a bit too far to walk to from the bridge, but around 2,000 kyat will cover the ride to this pleasant, quiet part of town. The hotel has two buildings – 1 and 2 – on opposite sides of a road, both of which have seen... Read our full review of Ngwe Setkar Hotels 2 and 1.
