Where to stay in Ye

Until recently, if the excellent Starlight’s six rooms were full then you had the unappetising choice of grungy May Shan or even grungier Seikantha Guesthouse. Fortunately, Mya Myint Mo has opened, improving the situation considerably. Starlight may still be our first choice but if you haven’t booked ahead during high season there’s not much point in turning up there after mid-afternoon as they will be full.

Starlight’s owners are considering building a resort-style place out of town and we’d expect Ye’s accommodation situation to change rapidly in the near future as more visitors trickle in.

No licenses for tourist accommodation were issued until late 2013 and one of the first in Ye was presented to the American-Burmese couple who established Starlight. This small lakeside spot has set good standards with clean, comfortable rooms, reasonable prices, helpful service, plenty of local information,... Read our full review of Starlight Guesthouse.

Mya Myint Hotel offers solid rooms at very good rates, and fair but minimal services and atmosphere. These will likely improve as the hotel, new as of 2016, finds its groove. While at present the four-storey Mya Myint is very quiet, this will surely change as more travellers reach Ye. A slightly more lived in feel and smoothing off of a couple of rough edges will improve things too, since for... Read our full review of Mya Myint Mo Hotel.

Located just below Starlight Guesthouse and facing the lake, the dingy old May Shan has clearly been around for a lot longer than foreigners have been visiting Ye. Being so close, it is the standard fallback should Starlight be full. Barely adequate though is the best you can say for this spot and you’d probably be better walking down to Mya Myint Mo instead. The fan rooms are cheap but... Read our full review of May Shan Guest House.
