Myeik

Myeik offers a reasonable choice of places to stay, with Thai-style Eain Taw Phyu Hotel topping our list. The excellent Grand Jade is a good midrange option and Sun and White Pearl is also a decent choice. The large Myaseesein is an okay Plan B while Myeik Guesthouse provides the cheapest option around. There were other Strand Road hotels under construction when we visited and more potential guesthouse spots in the old colonial quarter, so expect the situation to change quickly. Note that harbour facing rooms in a waterfront hotel can provide great views -- but are also liable to be noisy.

Myeik’s first Thai-style boutique hotel has great rooms, tasteful decor, an agreeable restaurant and the only pool in town. Staff members are efficient and friendly and they’ve made efforts with a small garden around the pool. For Burma, and considering the quality, we think their rates are more than reasonable and the only fault we can find is an inconvenient location. The brand new as... Don’t be put off by Hotel Grand Jade’s plush reception and smartly uniformed staff as rates are very reasonable. While it is firmly midrange in price, it’s comfortable and offers well-appointed new rooms that go for under half what you’d pay for an equivalent room in say Mandalay or Bagan, so if you’re heading north, now’s the time to splash out. Rooms at the front of the nine-storey... Read our full review of Hotel Grand Jade .

Taking up three floors above a stationery store, Sun is a cosy and comfortable little guesthouse with clean, good value rooms. This is a good spot and recommended if your budget doesn’t quite stretch to midrange neighbour Grand Jade. Though far from huge, its rooms are air-con and the hot showers work. It’s too small for much room decoration but the beds are comfortable, bedside lamp... Read our full review of Sun Guesthouse.

The waterfront Myaseesein Hotel must have been the town’s grandest when it first opened. While still providing adequate rooms at good rates it’s clearly come down in the world a bit since then. Although on Strand Road, it’s set back a bit by a fancy entrance driveway which keeps the noise down a bit and for the jetty, night market and general waterfront scene it is ideally placed. The... The new-looking White Pearl provides a good option in the budget range. It’s run by a friendly local Indian family and its location is convenient too. Directly behind Myaseesein, it has a central position but avoids the waterfront noise -- though its positioning does mean no waterfront views either. They offer an eclectic selection of no-frills, spotless rooms: small, large, window, no window,... Read our full review of White Pearl Hotel.

We’re not sure how new the odd 1970s-looking building is, but Myeik Guesthouse itself seems to be a new operation. Staff are friendly and the location right opposite the main Seik Nge Jetty is pretty good too. This does mean front rooms will get some waterfront noise. Downstairs is a minimart and the guesthouse is accessed by a metal staircase to the right. Windows are tiny and high up so... Read our full review of Myeik Guesthouse.
