Accommodation

While most of the accommodation is concentrated in and around Waitabula proper, there are some worthy beachside offerings, including the magnificent Oro Beach and Mananga Amba Beach (both on the north coast). Pero Beach in the far more isolated southwest Kodi region also has simple accommodation available.

Waitabula

Airport-style hotels aimed at the local business traveller is what you’ll find in Waitabula. All offer a range from basic budget rooms for the lowly clerk through to something for the executive, and are found along the main street that runs to the east. Note that each hotel names this road differently. For a cultural option, the Catholic-run Lembaga Studi and Pelestarian Budaya Sumba (Sumba Cultural Research and Conservation Institute) has an accommodation business on the side. Waitabula is a good base for exploring West Sumba, but you could just as easily base yourself at one of the nearby beaches, where you’ll find more tourist-friendly options.

Hotel Sinar Tambolaka is a busy local business hotel — think airport hotel, and you’ve just about got it. Indeed, if you’ve just arrived from the airport, it’s the closest sleep in town, found down a short lane opposite Waitabula market. Perched on the edge of a valley, Hotel Sinar Tambolaka’s great view gives it an edge over the other options in town. Two double-storey blocks offer... Read our full review of Hotel Sinar Tambolaka.

Large and slightly sterile, Hotel Sumba Sejatera sits behind a small row of shopfronts on the main Waitabula road. Two triple-storey blocks line a narrow courtyard garden. Room offerings kick off at basic fan rooms with a share cold water mandi, up to huge suite-style rooms. You’ll find better value budget and VIP-style rooms around town, but the midrange air-con rooms here are not bad... Read our full review of Hotel Sumba Sejatera.

Three kilometres west of Waitabula and run by the Catholic Redemptorist Order, Lembaga Studi and Pelestarian Budaya Sumba (Sumba Cultural Research and Conservation Institute) provide a handful of cute bungalows. There’s a small but interesting on-site museum too. Homely and clean brick and thatch air-con bungalows surround a large grassy patch edged with Marapu stone carvings. Decorated... Penginapan Melati is the cheapest sleep in Waitabula, and possibly the friendliest too -- you’ll find it on an embankment along the main road of Waitabula in an L-shaped block — one part double-storey, the other single. Rooms are positioned behind the reception and owner’s house edging a mossy cement courtyard. Louvred windows let the air flow into the simple clean rooms that come with a... Now we’re talking. Comfortable and relaxing, family-run Oro Beach Houses and Restaurant is one of the few tourist-style hotels in Sumba. Out of the centre of the town of Waitabula, but only nine kilometres from the airport, besides being an attraction itself, Oro Beach makes an excellent base to explore West Sumba. Mananga Amba Beach

Far enough out of town to seem off the beaten track, but close enough to visit all the sights, Mananga Amba Beach only has one hotel. If unrestricted sea views are what you crave, this is the place.

Imposing Mario Hotel and Cafe looks out of place on otherwise deserted Pantai Kita, with two large double-storey buildings making their presence felt, towering above the nearby beach, one housing the rooms and the other a restaurant. Just over 20 kilometres from Tambolaka airport, Mario’s is not too far out to base yourself for day trips around West Sumba. Currently 12 clean comfortable... Pero

On the southwest coast of Sumba, Pero offers a place to base yourself while being introduced to Sumba’s southern beaches and villages, without having to rush back to Waitabula. Take your time and feel at home in a local homestay.

A riot of mismatched patterns and colours, friendly Merzy Homestay offers a comfortable option 100 metres from the beach at Pero. Some 45 kilometres southwest of Tambolaka airport, the predominantly Muslim fishing village of Pero is a good base for visiting villages and beaches along the south coast. There’s no signage, but you can’t miss the bright pink, blue and aqua house surrounded by... Read our full review of Merzy Homestay.
