Where to stay in Padang

Padang

Accommodation in Padang is spread throughout town, but for most visitors, the best area to stay in is what is referred to as the Chinese area bounded by Jalan Mohammad Yamin in the north and Batang Arau River in the south. The vibe here is much more pleasant than other parts of town and the food is better.

The oddly named d’Oxville Hotel is a fantastic boutique hotel stylishly designed and decorated throughout. While the rooms are tiny, they are perfect for flashpackers, business travellers and those shunning budget digs. Rooms come with large LCD TVs with a few international channels, small writing desk and chair, large soft beds with plump pillows, safe to store valuables, hot water bathroom... New House Homestay is a fabulous large house with a dizzying array of rooms with a dizzying combination of prices. The cheapest rooms don’t come with air-con, some rooms do, some rooms come with hot water, some don’t, some share bathrooms, some have private bathrooms, some rooms face the road, some are at the back of the property. With this mishmash of facilities, it’s difficult to say... Read our full review of New House Homestay.

The lack of swimming pool when compared to Savali and d’Oxville is a slight negative but overall this is a good mid-range choice. Plan B is a large midrange hotel with all the in-room facilities you’d expect at this price point such as WiFi, large comfortable beds topped with fluffy duvets, air-con, LCD TVs, hot water bathrooms with Western toilet and just enough room to swing a cat.... Savali Hotel is a stylish boutique hotel with a small swimming pool located in the central tourist area of town. The small rooms here feel luxurious compared to the nearby cheapies and come with flatscreen TVs, WiFi, air-con, hot water bathrooms with Western toilet, soft beds with colourfully accented fabrics and a safety box. Yani Homestay, also known as Yanny Homestay, is a small guesthouse in the southern part of town catering to budget travellers. Hotel Bintang is an older style, multi-level hotel in the backstreets of the Chinese area of town. Rooms are simple, but come with air-con, hot-water or cold-water bathrooms with Western toilet, bottled water, some with TV and free in-room WiFi. The rooms are a little bland and uninspiring, but certainly liveable and worth a look if you’re unwilling to stump up a bit more cash for one of... Read our full review of Hotel Bintang.
