Kuta Beach road

The accommodation in Kuta town is mostly astonishingly bad value -- especially most of the places along beachfront Jalan Raya Pantai. Given that Kuta’s municipal beach is pretty ordinary, having a beach road location isn’t all that much of a bonus.

We stayed here on our first visit to Kuta Lombok many moons ago, when it rained for four days solid and we got to know our room interior very well. Today they’ve upgraded and the rooms are (for Kuta) great value. They’re clean and spacious, well decorated, with comfortable beds and spotless bathrooms. The grounds ramble back from the road (where a new restaurant and lobby was being constructed... Read our full review of Puri Rinjani.

By the market, Kuta

Perhaps named Hey Hey as it takes about six heys to wake the staff laying about in the garden sala, but Hey Hey offers great value budget rooms at a price point that works for a location this close to the beach, set down towards the market end of Kuta town. You can’t drive here from Jalan Pantai Kuta but by motorbike is fine, or you can approach from the other side by car no problems. An upstairs... Read our full review of Hey Hey Homestay.

Long-running Sekar Kuning (Yellow Flower) is the pick of the bunch for a budget bunch on the beach road. Rooms are simple, but clean and inoffensive. Go for a room towards the rear if you can to dodge restaurant and traffic noise. With these low prices, Sekar Kuning attracts a steady backpacker crowd and the restaurant (at least when we passed though) had the atmosphere to match. They have quite... Jl Pariwisata

Surfer hangout Kuta Bay Homestay lies very close to the open market, and has a small pool with no shade. The cheapest fan rooms are right out the back, but rooms the next tier up are a good improvement, with a lot more space and come with a double and a single bed (100k extra if you use it as a triple). The cheaper rooms are rattan and bamboo but the air-con editions are smarter, with tiled... Read our full review of Kuta Bay Homestay.

Set a little down the road from Tastura and Surfer Hut, Segare Anak offers a mix of cheaper and older rooms (towards the back) and more expensive, newer rooms towards the front. We were shown one of the better rooms (it was the only unoccupied one) and it was perfectly acceptable, though not memorable in anyway -- unlike the swimming pool, which is miniscule. Staff were probably the most... Read our full review of Segare Anak.

Off the beach road

A block back Jalan Raya Kuta runs more or less parallel to the beach road and offers far better value for money, with some quite smart new options along with longer running budget stalwarts. Jalan Pariwisata runs perpendicular to the beach leading back to the mega roundabout; the end near the beach is quite scruffy and unappealing, but further back there are some worthwhile options.

The very popular Bombora Bungalows has a clutch of rooms around a small swimming pool along a quieter stretch of Jalan Pariswisata. Rooms are bungalow style and are clean and well kept, with hammocks strung out front and WiFi beamed throughout. They all face onto a small, beanbag-strewn plunge pool. Beds have decent linen with a throw and clean bathrooms. A social cafe and bar out front provides... Read our full review of Bombora Bungalows.

There’s maybe a Spanish hand in Kuta Baru and it shows with tasteful rooms looking over a lap pool in a lawn setting that runs alongside the resort’s restaurant. Rooms are spic and span and decently sized, two to a block and overlooking the pool. They’re fitted out with a splash -- discerning art on the wall, a throw over the bed and stone-finished rainshower bathrooms. As with Kuta Mara, Kuta... Read our full review of Kuta Baru.

If you’re looking for a backpacker crashpad with a traveller vibe, look no further than The Spot Bungalows. This is a friendly place offering a gaggle of bamboo and rattan cold-water bungalows around a small lawn area with an attached cafe and bar. Imagine the kind of thatch hut you’d pick up on a beach in Thailand, drop it in here and that’s what you’ll get. Expect bouncy floors and, well, a... Read our full review of The Spot Bungalows.

A solid walk back from the centre of Kuta town
T: (0819) 1710 0983

Yuli’s is a sprawling homestay a solid walk back from the centre of Kuta town, and going by the number of motorbikes and cars, we doubt many walk it. The homestay runs back through two lawned compounds, each with a swimming pool and with concrete rooms in blocks overlooking the pool and lawn. Rooms are oversized, with plenty of room for an extra bed and the spacious grounds are ideal for families... Read our full review of Yuli's Homestay.

Family House Lombok

Family House is set off the north side of Jalan Raya Kuta and offers flashpacker to midrange rooms clustered around a compact swimming pool. The Family House name doesn’t point to this place having a particularly family focus, but it’s sleepy and a little set back off the road. Rooms are a very smart -- we were first shown a deluxe suite which was of a very solid size, included a tub, and had... Read our full review of Family House Lombok.

Set well south of Kuta proper, Kuta Cabana Lodge rests on the rise, delivering impressive distant views of Kuta Beach. It’s a bit of an unusual arrangement, with a mix of standard rooms in a row house setup and then a few far larger effectively two-floor bungalows, and then, if you upsize again, you get a family bungalow that can sleep six and would have even better views over the surrounds. Jl Raya Kuta
T: (0370) 615 8022

Kuta Mara is one of a clutch of new, flashpacker-orientated hotels going in along Jalan Raya Kuta -- they deliver in creature comforts with a pool at not unreasonable rates. They were still building the restaurant out front when we visited in January 2015, so the rates we were quoted did not include breakfast -- rates may increase somewhat once they’ve finished building. But even with a small... Read our full review of Kuta Mara.

Like Tastura right over the other side of town, Kuta Indah is an old-school, rambling hotel on a large block of real estate not long before the road begins to weave its way up and over the hill. It’s an inoffensive choice, with older chalet-style rooms scattered around behind the restaurant area, and a newer incongruous block in front of reception. The older bungalows are probably the better... Read our full review of Kuta Indah Hotel.

As long running as it is far out of town, Mimpi Manis feels like a true homestay in that you really feel like you’re staying in someone’s backyard, with them and their animated dogs. The main issue is that the location is a long way from anything else, so you will need your own transport to get into Kuta proper. If that’s not an issue, the rooms are simple if rustic fare and very affordable.... Read our full review of Mimpi Manis Homestay.
