Accommodation

Senaru

Senaru village is pretty much one road and the accommodation is lined along it. Places on the eastern side of the road offer the better views -- some of which can be stunning. All places can arrange trekking, either in-house or by pointing you to an agency that can assist. Some places offer WiFi - if it is essential for you, do check it works before accepting the room.

Rinjani Lighthouse is a bit of a standout on the Senaru Road as long as you don’t mind being away from the centre of the action. The room we were shown was oversized with a Western-standard bathroom and plenty of space to swing a cat -- save the pillar that runs straight up the centre of the room -- we thought it was a tree at first. The double bed is well screened in and we’d recommend going for... Read our full review of Rinjani Lighthouse.

Set just up the hill from Rinjani Lodge, Pondok Senaru is a mainstay on the tourist bus and tour group circuit, meaning it can go from deserted to Disneyland in the blink of an eye. That’s not to say it isn’t worth considering, as some of the dining areas (there are a few!) have some of the most spectacular views in Senaru -- including some of the waterfalls. However, as with Rinjani Lodge, it... Read our full review of Pondok Senaru.

Rinjani Lodge is easily the most upmarket of the digs in Senaru, but with limited rooms in high season you will need to book in advance to get in. Rooms are well oversized with semi-outdoor bathrooms that themselves are almost the size of some of the more budget-orientated rooms in Senaru. They’re air-con, with flat screen TVs and comfortable lounging areas out front, and a terraced, well-loved... Read our full review of Rinjani Lodge.

Set up towards the top of Senaru Road, just shy of the turnaround by Bale Bayan, Gunung Baru has a cluster of simple concrete freestanding chalets in pale green and off-cream colours set in a small depression behind the restaurant area. The place was devoid of life when we passed through in December but we eventually rustled up someone from next door who had a key and showed us around. Rooms are... When we showed up here there was a lot of confusion as to whether this place is called Segara Anak or Ahmed’s, but we think the former is the rooms and the latter the trekking outfit. Regardless, for budget travellers, this is a solid deal. The rooms are basic, perhaps slightly stuffy, but they’re cleanish and have plenty enough space for a couple. The real selling point here though are the... Read our full review of Segara Anak Cottages Ahmed's Expeditions.

Lime-green and purple and owned by trekking outfit, John’s Adventures just down the hill, Senaru Villa offers sharp upstairs-downstairs villa rooms (four to a block) with the option of either Ocean View down to the Bali Sea, or Mountain view up to Rinjani. We’re not sure the mountain views are worth the extra coin, but if you’re looking for Western standards and Rinjani Lodge is full or beyond... Read our full review of Senaru Villa.

Teres Genit

A blip of a village to the east of Senaru proper, when coming from western Lombok, don’t take the Senaru turnoff, instead continue through Buyan and where the road turns left, with an administrative office on your right and a smaller road goes straight ahead, that’s the turn off to Teres Genit. Just keep going, eventually you’ll reach Rinjani Garden. Yes, they could do with more signs!

Rinjani Mountain Garden offers just a handful of character-laden rooms set in a magnificent location in the foothills of Gunung Rinjani, overlooking the ocean in the far distance. With a menagerie of well-cared for animals roaming around — geese, horses, cats, chickens, turkeys, dogs and even a hornbill — plus a large spring-fed, stone-lined pool to splash around in, and excellent German...
