Where to stay in Nong Kiaow

Most of Nong Kiaow’s accommodation runs along the banks of the Nam Ou, each vying for that coveted river view. The result is a jigsaw puzzle and don’t be surprised if your guesthouse only has a glimpse of the river. While new hotel openings have slowed, many existing places are expanding meaning variable room standards—ask to see a few rooms. The village is tough on ultra-frugal travellers; as of 2018, only Delilah’s, on the north side of the Nam Ou, has a dorm.

South side of the bridge, Nong Kiaow

This side of the river, locally known as Ban Sophoun village, has the main concentration of guesthouses, restaurants and bars. It is on the opposite side of the boat landing.

Ban Lao Sunset Guesthouse is one of the few budget accommodation in Nong Kiaow with true riverfront bungalows and unobstructed view. That means no looking at the back of another guesthouse or bungalows positioned at a weird angle to get a slice of sightline to the river. The stilted bungalows at Ban Lao Sunset Guesthouse cantilever along the riverbanks and the location is... Read our full review of Ban Lao Sunset Guesthouse.

It’s hard to fault Meexai Guesthouse for the price, and that’s why it is one of the best places for a flashpacker to throw down their pack on this side of the river. It’s a relatively new three storey building with rooms connected by an exterior walkway which also doubles as the terrace, each room having its own set of table, chairs and plug—not a bad spot to catch up on some emails... Visitors to Nong Kiaow looking for upscale comforts are limited, and Nong Kiau Riverside is one of only two options that cater to the higher end market. Located at the south end of the bridge, 15 bungalows cantilever along a most generous stretch of riverfront that does not directly face any development. Every one of the rooms will have a view of the Nam Ou and towering forest clad karst. The... Read our full review of Nong Kiau Riverside .

Vongmany Guesthouse represents the current trend in Nong Kiaow—no rickety bamboo bungalow here, instead a newish tile and concrete building making for a generic guesthouse with a slice of the river view. It’s centrally located, right in the thick of the accommodation cluster immediately after the bridge. However, the building does have a little breathing room around it with nothing in the... Once a good place for backpackers to fulfil their river view bungalow dreams, Nam Houn Guesthouse has steadily gone down hill and it is in worse shape than it’s ever been, but it remains a popular choice in high season and it has some qualities travellers may be looking for. In terms of quality and liveability, the bungalows closest to the house are the best as they seem to be the newest.... Read our full review of Nam Houn Guesthouse.

Ban Sophoun, south side at the bridge

Directly beside one end of the bridge, longstanding Sunrise Guesthouse and the attached Joy’s Restaurant continues to be a backpacker favourite, namely because of the basic bungalows which are one of the cheapest options in Nong Kiaow. Also, it’s become something of a hub to meet other travellers in a town that lacks a true hostel. There are many other places with better rooms that are... Ultra frugal travellers will struggle in Nong Kiaow during high season, because as of 2018, only Delilah has a dorm room and once full, people looking for a cheap private room are in a hard spot—luckily, Sythane Guesthouse fits the bill. It’s basic and the location—directly on the main street not far from the bridge—has no soul, but those who are not fussed about a river views should... Read our full review of Sythane Guesthouse.

North side of the bridge, Nong Kiaow

The north side of the bridge, locally known as Ban Nong Kiaow, is the main town. It has local shops, the school, hospital and most importantly to travellers, the boat station and bus station. Accommodation here is more spread out than on the south side.

Mandala Ou is one of the top places to stay in Nong Kiaow—though not luxurious, the resort boasts comfortable bungalows, a herbal sauna, swimming pool and an amazing view of the river and karst. Located one kilometre from the centre of Nong Kiaow, a flat 15-minute walk, the hotel’s somewhat isolated location means a quiet, serene riverside environment without traffic or local noises.... Ban Nong Kiaow, on Nam Ou River, behind secondary school, 900 m from bus station

Nam Ou River Lodge is a solid little place built in 2012, located on a quieter section of the Nam Ou river banks almost equidistant between the bus station and the boat landing. The location is handy, the river serene and the rooms are good value, meaning that it is often full. ###17256 The guesthouse has eight rooms. Six are in the two-storey building block, which has a communal balcony, while... Read our full review of Nam Ou River Lodge.

Pho Sai River View, which also goes by Phosai Guesthouse, is one of our favourite affordable finds in Nong Kiaow. It’s about 600 m from any sort of tourist restaurant or tour office, with seven bungalows on the Nam Ou river: five bamboo thatch and two concrete rooms downstairs. Yes, the bamboo bungalows have a balcony. Yes, the balcony has a hammock. Yes, from the hammock is a fantastic... Read our full review of Pho Sai River View.

Lamorn Guesthouse has no atmosphere and is located outside the tourist centre, but these are things some may be willing to overlook in favour of an inexpensive room with private bathroom in a newer building. Though conveniently close to the boat landing and on the same side of the river as the bus station, Sengdao Chittavong is often overlooked as backpackers immediately head across the bridge to the main cluster of accommodation. Well pause for a second, because this guesthouse offers oodles more space and overall represents good value. Unlike the claustrophobic mosaic of buildings found at...
