Where to stay in Tawau

Tawau

Tawau hotels are equally divided between those that cater for local and Indonesian business travellers, and dingy digs for foreign workers. The former are good value, and the latter, with one notable exception, are not. Jalan Haji Karim is the business centre, and some good options are here, but for a better deal head to the edges of town. Tawau is small, so you won’t have far to go.

Lot 92-94, Block M, Bandar Sabindo, Tawau

Opened in April 2016, City Garden Hotel offers the best value seaview rooms in town, and what’s a seaside town without a view of it? Opposite one of Tawau’s well known seafood restaurants and a step away form the long-distance bus terminal, the modernist lines of the freshly painted grey and rust-coloured four-storey block look smart and contemporary. The lobby filled with fake... Read our full review of City Garden Hotel .

Jalan St. Patrick, Tawau

Tawau is not quite LA, but LA Hotel stands out like the proverbial on the Tawau skyline and adds a smattering of class and glitz to the business hotel choices. The rooftop bar is ace, the best spot in town for a bevy or two (also worth a pitstop if your digs are elsewhere). Stylish and clean contemporary rooms in this multi-storey tower offer comfort and mod-cons — the seaview rooms are... Read our full review of LA Hotel.

Marco Polo Hotel
Midrange - 120 to 250 ringgit
Jalan Clinic, Tawau

Classic and classy older style Marco Polo Hotel is the grand old dame of Tawau’s hotels. It was good enough for Swedish royals on a state visit in 1996 and it’s possibly still basking a little on that claim—her glory years have passed, but rooms are well maintained and feel plush and comfortable. Spacious carpeted rooms are well appointed with solid but slightly dated furnishings. TVs are... Read our full review of Marco Polo Hotel.

Don’t baulk at walking up the stairs to Hotel Soon Yee. It may look like yet another fleapit from outside, but Hotel Soon Yee has been popular with budget travellers since the days of the hippy trail, and once inside it’s easy to see why. The hotel may be no-frills, but it’s bright, clean, and cheap. For less than the price of a dorm in nearby towns, you can have an airy, spacious,... Read our full review of Hotel Soon Yee.

Penginapan VS
Flashpacker - 60 to 120 ringgit
1194 Jalan Stephen Tan, Tawau
T: (089) 774 000

The welcoming modern purple and white lobby and smiling staff at Penginapan VS, or VS Guesthouse, attest that it’s a step up from most of the dingy flashpacker choices around the market area, and it doesn’t charge by the hour. Clean, basic air-con rooms are bright or boxy depending on whether there’s a window or not (go for the window). Lime green feature walls freshen and jolly-up the...
