The best places to stay in Lonely Beach are not actually located on the beach, but rather a short walk south along the rocky coast and in the village. Though Lonely Beach itself is beautiful, we weren't very impressed by the resorts found along the sand. Nearby Bailan Bay boasts some solid accommodation options removed from the party scene.

North Lonely Beach (the beach itself)

On Lonely Beach itself, a handful of resorts are equipped to satisfy everyone from backpackers to luxury-seekers, though none are anything to write home about. We opted not to list upscale Bhumiyana Resort after their staff made it passively obvious that our baseball cap and baggy shorts were not up to their standards. Note that Siam Hut Resort has received several reports of theft over the years; so keep that in mind before taking one of their crummy old beach huts.

Nature Beach Resort
Backpacker - Under 600B
98 Moo 4, Lonely Beach, Ko Chang
T: (039) 558 025-7

Fronting a great stretch of beach that's a 10-minute stroll from the village, Nature Beach has some ups and downs. The cheapest log cabin style fan bungalows are quite inviting, with thatch roofs, decent porches, high ceilings, several windows, firm beds and hot water bathrooms. Mosquito nets are absent, but windows are screened. The bungalows are set around a sandy area shaded by abundant trees... Read our full review of Nature Beach Resort.

South Lonely Beach (the rocky coast and village)

Most of the "Lonely Beach" accommodation is found along the rocky coastline further south from the actual beach and off the nearby main drag. Practically every restaurant and minimart in this area has a few cheap rooms for rent. Budget travellers should have no trouble finding a cheap, basic room here even in peak season, but keep in mind that the party atmosphere and ear-popping music often continues into the wee morning hours.

Backpacker - Under 600B
Soi Tian Chai 3, Lonely Beach, Ko Chang
T: (081) 721 2547

In 2012, this serene hilltop retreat was bought by a Dutch couple who have done a fabulous job with what was already a quality bungalow joint. Simple dark wood bungalows and larger but still very tasteful villas are nestled into a lush tropical garden where butterflies pollenate the abundant flower bushes. The cheaper rooms are cosy and have comfortable beds with mosquito nets to go with... Read our full review of Oasis.

Kachapura Resort
Flashpacker - 600B to 1,500B
Lonely Beach, Ko Chang
T: (081) 285 2999

With a name that might give off the impression that this is a high-end boutique resort, Kachapura does deliver some elegance in a budget package. Great value detached cottages are spread well apart from one another on a palm-covered hill. With the exception of air-conditioners in some and fans in others, all rooms are the same. They have dark wood exterior walls, high, slanted roofs, at least ten... Read our full review of Kachapura Resort .

Warapura Resort
Midrange - 1,500B to 4,000B
4/3 Moo 1, Lonely Beach, Ko Chang
T: (039) 558 123

Perfect for couples who want some luxury by the sea but not a generic beach resort experience, Warapura has a youthful, understated style. With whitewashed walls and turquoise trim, rooms are in a sort of Greco-Roman-meets-Thai-ocean-chic design that works really well. Along with all of the creature comforts like TV and air-con, the bright, airy and spotless seaside villa we checked out had a... Read our full review of Warapura Resort.

KLKL Hostel
Flashpacker - 600B to 1,500B
Lonely Beach, Koh Chang
T: (083) 088 3808

Situated a short walk from the action, but 10 minutes from the beach, KLKL is one of the quirkiest places to stay on Ko Chang. As best we can tell, the theme is ‘prison camp for surfers'. Large private rooms (no dorms here despite the name) are in two-storey towers painted bright purple, blue or green. They're set around a decent swimming pool and surrounded by high fencing that ensure no... Read our full review of KLKL Hostel.

Magic Garden
Backpacker - Under 600B
4/37 Moo 1, Lonely Beach, Ko Chang
T: (083) 756 8827

Magic Garden is central to the village in Lonely Beach, with good value wood bungalows spread over a large and lush hillside. The huts come with thatch roofs, woven bamboo doors and inviting porches with axe pillows. Inside they're simpler and the one we checked out had some wear and tear, though it was relatively well kept and comes with hot water. Up by the road front there's a large restaurant... Seaflower Resort
Backpacker - Under 600B
Lonely Beach, Ko Chang

Set in the exact spot where Lonely Beach first rose to backpacker glory thanks to the now long-gone Treehouse Bungalows, Seaflower has a big cluster of pink concrete bungalows overlooking a lovely seafront garden. Set towards the back of the grounds and tightly packed together, the cheapest rooms are basic, with wall-mounted fan, firm bed, mosquito net, hot water bathroom and porch. Though these... Stone Free
Backpacker - Under 600B
Lonely Beach, Ko Chang

Practically every business in the Lonely Beach ‘village' has a few cheap rooms for rent upstairs, but none possess the character of Stone Free. The ground floor of this rag-tag backpacker favourite is home to a great nightspot where the Sticky Rice Blue Band puts on weekly performances that draw regulars from across the island. The large common space includes rustic wood lofts with floor... Read our full review of Stone Free.

Bailan Bay

Quieter than neighbouring Lonely Beach, but without the great stretch of sand, Ao Bailan has some solid budget to midrange options, some along the rocky coastline and others on the inland side of the road. The only place where you can actually stay on the beach is Bailan Beach Resort, but anyone is free to enjoy this sliver of sand for free. Overall, the quality and value of accommodation in Bailan is exceptional.

Bailan Bay Resort
Backpacker - Under 600B
5/1 Moo 1, Ao Bailan, Ko Chang
T: (039) 558 077

As you ascend the hill from the Lonely Beach direction, Bailan Bay Resort is the first place you come to on the right-hand side, with a roadside restaurant that affords tremendous views to the west. Descend the long concrete stairway and you'll reach a peaceful patch of seaside greenery with charming white cottages scattered onto the shady hillside. A private peninsula shoots off to the north,... Read our full review of Bailan Bay Resort.

Bailan Hut
Backpacker - Under 600B
Ao Bailan, Ko Chang
T: (087) 704 9057

At the very end of a side road that winds past some other low-key budget spots (including Green Cottage), Bailan Hut is a great choice for funky flashpackers or backpackers. Though the fan bungalows are set close together behind the larger, newer air-con rooms, they have a lot more character than most and some unexpected touches. Each comes with high woven bamboo ceiling, white walls complemented... Read our full review of Bailan Hut.

Lazy Republique Villa
Flashpacker - 600B to 1,500B
37/7 Moo 1, Ao Bailan, Ko Chang
T: (087) 041 2905

Set amid a quiet, green hillside on the inland side of the road as you enter Bailan from Lonely Beach, this French-owned spot has five contemporary-styled villas that have drawn rave online reviews. The rooms have massive glass windows that bathe polished concrete walls and floors with natural light. Though the interiors are on the spartan side -- just a desk and fridge for furnishings -- beds... Read our full review of Lazy Republique Villa.

Tarzan Island Resort
Backpacker - Under 600B
Ao Bailan, Ko Chang
T: (083) 007 6977

Located on the inland side of the main road, this relatively large budget spot has a range of well-done wooden bungalows set around a well-groomed garden. Grassy strands from the high thatched roofs dangle from the tall, stilted rooms and mix with tropical foliage, lending the exotic feel of a Polynesian village. Some rooms have air-con and others fans, but all are quite sumptuous for the prices,... Read our full review of Tarzan Island Resort.

Bailan Beach Resort
Midrange - 1,500B to 4,000B
37 Moo 1, Ao Bailan, Ko Chang
T: (086) 559 7954

Enjoying a sliver of beach amid the mangroves of tiny Bailan Bay, this mid-size, midrange resort continues to deliver fine rooms and good service. The odd aspect about this place is that the smallest, cheapest rooms have the best location nearest to the sea. These are simple but pleasant detached air-con cottages with woven bamboo walls, comfortable beds, TVs and fridges. Further back, a handful... Read our full review of Bailan Beach Resort.

Green Cottage Beach Resort
Backpacker - Under 600B
Ao Bailan, Ko Chang
T: (091) 241 3191

This laid back spot has average white bungalows with large porches that bag you direct sea views, though there's no beach here. The resort (it's really more of a bungalow joint) has attempted to make up for the lack of sand by building what is possibly Ko Chang's tiniest swimming pool, but hey, it's something. All rooms have firm beds with mosquito nets, large windows, TVs, desks, fridges and hot... Read our full review of Green Cottage Beach Resort.
