Good flashpacker option
The aptly named Bagan Central successfully fills the flashpacker gap in New Bagan.
Found right on Main or Khayae Street, it’s also one of the rare New Bagan sites which doesn’t involve a 15 -minute walk home after dinner. We like their layout, with chalet-style rooms set around a cute courtyard garden boasting rock gardens and walkways over a large fishpond. It isn’t too cluttered and there are plenty of open areas for chilling.
Rooms are in partially stone-fronted and brick red-painted small blocks, with deluxe versions a bit better positioned. Interiors seem clean and comfortable enough with fresh coats of white paint and lots of dark varnished furniture and are well-sized. All have air-con, hot showers, fridges and cable TV. Care and some imagination has gone into the rooms and common areas and there is a good feel to the place.
Their dorm gets bad reviews, with just mattresses on the floor and one over-used bathroom to share, but apparently they’re aware of this and kept conspicuously quiet about its existence when we visited. The family management seem like a smart bunch so we’re guessing they must be planning to either get rid of it or upgrade it.
Breakfasts also look above average and with an only minimal increase for high season we feel Bagan Central is a good deal throughout the year. The slightly better deluxe are worth the extra few dollars if available.
