Runner up in our fave upmarket Bagan pick
Bagan Hotel River View, just out of town on the south side by the river and within easy reach of many temples, boasts a lush garden and general layout far superior to those of the adjacent more upmarket spots.
The Ayeyarwaddy-side location and well situated terrace are major pluses, though while it makes some great low season offers, they more than double their rates for the rest of the year.
Beginning with the old semi-ruined entrance gate (we couldn’t work out if this was a recreation or not, but we assume so), the decor is solidly temple-esque, and indeed you could do with a flashlight to work your way around the spacious but dimly lit, brick-lined lobby. The garden though is exemplary, with a delightful pool shaded by mature trees and covered seating areas dotted around providing views of nearby stupas. (Most Old Bagan resorts have an ancient stupa in their own grounds -- this place has two.)
Rooms are slightly older than most Old Bagan resorts but they are still well maintained and comfortable. Most come are deluxe single-storey rooms, with verandas set in small blocks, though they have a handful of larger suites too. The temple chic continues inside with teak floors and painted bare brick walls. While bedrooms and bathrooms aren’t new and slightly on the tired side they are clean enough, not too small and well appointed.
With more than 100 rooms on offer availability shouldn’t be an issue outside of the busiest months and that explains their bargain low season prices. For quieter months, rooms are definitely worth it, though the star of the show is their lovely garden and riverside terrace which isn’t too shabby for $55-60. Some rates below are slightly nonsensical, but that’s what they told us.
