Classy but pricey
The Hotel @ Tharabar Gate is a simple and classy operation, with a lower key, more understated decor and layout than many other Old Bagan extravaganzas.
Prices quoted are on the absurd side, but you might snare a walk-in or online discount.
There’s a more Thai than Sino-Burmese style to Tharabar. The entrance is unassuming and gives onto an excellent alfresco dining area and medium sized pool. Rooms are in a series of one-storey blocks laid out along paths leading through a shady, well-tended garden with plenty of mature trees. It doesn’t front onto the river but is very convenient for the cafes around Ananda Paya. Although pagodas stand just outside the resort walls they didn’t have their own pet one on the grounds, which is good to see.
The brick and tile-roofed rooms‘ interiors are equally restrained decor-wise, and despite all the tall trees around they do manage to be bright and airy thanks to high ceilings and wide windows. Bathrooms are particularly good. There is of course air-con, hot water, minibar, toiletries and safe, and the WiFi seems better than at most spots. The in-house restaurant gets good reviews if you’re after Western food or Westernised versions of local, and they have their own spa too.
Things go seriously pear-shaped though when they quote their prices. After being informed low rates were $180, they offered us a room for $100 (presumably occupancy was low on the day). Their website has the same room at $245 and higher for high season. A row of suite rooms at the far end of the garden are priced at a ridiculous $350 for low season and while they hadn’t fixed high season rates when we visited, we don’t really care anyway.
This hotel is tasteful and comfy but not that special -- we don’t reckon adding an @ to your name justifies such absurd prices. You get much more for your money at Bagan Hotel River View which has a wonderful riverside terrace.
