Some distance away from the city centre, Ayarwaddy River View Hotel stands on its own across the road from the river, with great unobstructed views of the Ayeyarwaddy.
It’s one of the better appointed hotels in Mandalay, with midrange features and prices, but is one of the cheapest deals offering a rare downtown swimming pool.
Rooms are spacious, bright and airy with air-con, cable TV, minibar and table and chairs. Hot and cold showers and bath tubs are a step above most other hotels in town and appreciable after a dusty day around the city. Decor is minimal but views are very good from upper floors in both directions. You pay extra for a river aspect, but rear rooms have fine vistas of downtown Mandalay and across to Mandalay Hill.
The hotel boasts an excellent rooftop bar facing due west across the Ayeyarwaddy. Sunset views here are second to none. While the on-the-house cocktail is welcome, we could live without the free traditional puppet show. You’ve got time to have a couple of sundowners here then grab a cab uptown for some dinner.
A ground floor restaurant next to reception serves the included breakfast and while there’s a business centre with computers available WiFi isn’t necessarily any better here than it is in a cheap guesthouse though. Staff are very friendly and helpful, and some effort has been made with the details. A pineapple and sweet pepper welcome drink is an interesting touch! A small pool area is a rare find, too.
Located north on Strand Road between 22 and 23 Streets, it is a long walk from the centre, though taxis are always available and shouldn’t set you back more than around 4,000 kyat. We’re slightly concerned as to what their 2016-17 high season rates will be, as they hadn’t decided at the time of our visit, and this hotel is very popular with tour companies so it can get booked up well in advance during busy months. It’s well worth trying to snare a room though.
