For a tight budget
No. 221, 28th St between 80th and 81st Sts, Mandalay T: (02) 33223, (02) 34162, (02) 66534 F: (02) 34162
Hotel Venus is for extreme budget travellers who don't mind a distinct lack of luxury.
The location is good, just a couple of blocks south of the palace moat and in between the train station and Diamond Plaza. Their sign is confusing, making it a bit hard to find and their entrance at night is dark. The trick is to look for MiKi Beauty and Health parlour, which is below street level, and offers cheap and clothes-on massages. The real draw to this place is the price; at night it is not too welcoming, but at least during the day the rooms with windows can warm up to show basic furnishings but include old air-con or fan, minibar, TV and coffee and tea facilities. The bathrooms are clean but worn and have hot and cold water, when it is working. The staff are attentive and make up for a lack of English with genuine smiles.
