Mandalay’s best deal
While it's difficult to find any standout choices among the mass of very similar flashpacker options in Mandalay, the well-organised and efficiently managed Kaung Myint proves to be an exception.
The hotel is relatively new as of 2016, and rooms are spotless, with efficient air-con and ensuite hot showers. They also come with a kettle for tea and coffee, fridge and minibar, cable TV and most surprisingly of all for a $30 room, even bathrobes. Mattresses are firm but not too hard and huge beds are equipped with comfy duvets. There’s no decor to speak of but we’ve seen less well-appointed rooms at twice the price.
In keeping with the overall hotel, staff and management are also bright and pleasant and we found them particularly helpful with sorting out travel and ticketing requests. The location’s slightly away from the main action but, being just opposite the railway station, it's not too far either.
If you throw in their excellent local or Western breakfast, taken on their top-floor restaurant, then Kaung Myint makes for an excellent all-round package at a very good price. We found further discounts available through online booking, so do check Agoda or Booking.
Superior rooms are slightly larger with deluxe bigger again and located on upper floors, so they have better views too. An interesting touch that you don’t see often in Burma is designated airport-style smoking rooms on some floors, which some may appreciate.
Standard options are on the small size, and could prove a bit cramped for two people, but it won't be an issue for single occupancy. As usual, whether this appeals or not will depend on just how much time you’re planning on spending in your hotel room.
Expect around a 10 percent surcharge on the room rates below during their busy season of November to April.
