Top mid-range spot
The Golden Empress Hotel, which has just 13 rooms, is one of our top flashpacker picks for Nyaung Shwe, thanks to tastefully decorated rooms and super-friendly service.
It fills fast being so small, so book ahead!
The powder-blue main house has seen a relatively recent conversion to an inn-style hotel and care and thought clearly went into doing so. The cosy reception and restaurant area downstairs is finished in local pine and contains a small library and laptop, with useful printer free for guest use, as well as all-day included tea and coffee. They also have a rooftop cafe with splendid views, which is open for dry season only.
Rooms are large – the upstairs ones have a balcony with fine views for an extra $5 – and the light-coloured pine and large windows give, particularly in the upper floor rooms, a very bright and airy feel. Mosquito nets are also provided, although there’s no garden so mozzies shouldn’t be bad anyway. Clean bathrooms have hot showers.
Empress is run by a friendly local family who will provide plenty of travel advice and assistance with onward bookings.
The Golden Empress is part of a cluster of guesthouses located on Phaung Daw Pyan Road just south of the centre and close to the boat jetties.
