May Guest House is a charming and popular little spot -- it's one of our favourite budget picks for Nyaung Shwe, with rooms starting at a bargain $15 in low season and $20 in high.
We simply couldn’t find many other spots around with clean rooms and ensuite bathrooms at those rates.
The guesthouse is set in a very cute garden and with the friendly family who run the guesthouse and its small number of rooms, the place has an almost homestay-like feel. It is slightly off the main drag but not too far, and this means it's a quiet location.
As you enter, the former family home – now a bright yellow painted reception area – is ahead while off to the left a small but attractive garden houses a roofed eating area. Rooms are in a yellow decorated wooden block to one side. They are no frills, but the rooms are clean and comfortable enough and all have chairs outside on a communal veranda. They are fan-cooled only, but air-con is not usually a necessity in Nyaung Shwe anyway. The ensuite bathrooms, while small, have hot showers.
Rooms are not large and decidedly thin walls plus a lack of double beds confirms this is not a honeymoon option. For single travellers though, it’s a very good choice. Perhaps due to the small size, WiFi reception seemed slightly better than average in these parts, and though the Western breakfast is far from inspired they’ll happily provide you with a local alternative. Their travel assistance and tour booking service gets good feedback from guests, too.
