Golden Empress Hotel
A great deal for couples
No. 19, Phaungtawpyan St T: (081) 209 037
The Golden Empress Hotel is in a quiet part of town, about a 10-minute walk to Yone Gyi Street, where most foreign travellers can be found.
The hotel, only about a year old, consists of a mostly pine wood interior and is airy, making for a very pleasant atmosphere. Rooms are simple but comfortable, and include hot water, fan, mosquito net and large beds. There's no air-con, but this isn't a problem in cool Nyaung Shwe. The rooms on the second floor are $5 more but include a balcony and views of the surrounding mountains. This is a great deal for couples who want to stay somewhere nice without breaking the bank and families might consider the spacious family room, located on the second floor. We're told it fills up during busy season, so book in advance if you plan to be here then. Western-style breakfast of eggs, toast and pancakes is included in the room rate.
