Grand Hill Hotel
Past its best
Sin Phyushin St (off Bogyoke, or Main, Rd), Hpa-an T: (058) 22286, (058) 23375, (094) 977 0491 F: (058) 22491
Once Hpa-an’s prime location for midrange and tour group accommodation Grand Hill is in need of a makeover or it risks being left behind by the town’s recent new additions, though its rooms do remain perfectly adequate.
The location is a drawback too, as it isn’t really walking distance from the centre.
Most rooms are individual concrete bungalows that are clean and comfortable enough though decidedly spartan both inside and out. Several other rooms in a block above reception and restaurant are again spartan but have at least seen a more recent makeover. They come with fridge, minibar, air-con, hot-water bathroom with tub, cable TV and intermittent WiFi. Reception, with plentiful friendly staff, is on one side of this building and a restaurant serving pretty good inclusive breakfasts on the other. In between are a couple of redundant rooms used as storage. Despite having a great lawn in front of the rows of bungalows and a spacious terrace outside the restaurant, the latter has been ‘under construction’ for several years now and at present there is nowhere at all to sit outside. Setting up some tables on the well maintained lawn or opening up one of the empty store rooms as a bar/coffee shop would greatly improve matters and, we can’t help feel, greatly improve business.
Note most of their standard $30 rooms are in rear rows without windows, but their superiors at $50 are worth considering if you can’t get your first choice in town.
The location is on a signposted sidestreet to the right off Bogyoke (or Main) Street, a couple of kilometres from the centre of town.
