The Mawlamyaing Strand Hotel

It's got nothing to do with Yangon's famous Strand Hotel but Mawlamyine's Strand does possess a prime spot on the road of the same name.

Photo of The Mawlamyaing Strand Hotel It's both the town's largest and most upmarket accommodation option at present.

The Mawlamyaing Strand (with yet another interesting town spelling variation in its name), is located at the top end of the riverfront road north of the central market and adjacent to Attran, so it also has some great views across the estuary. This relatively new five-storey construction is probably the most imposing building in the downtown area. At least it has the advantage of having plenty of rooms, so you'll have a good chance of some availability in high season. It can get very busy with Thai tour groups.

Rooms are excellent and while price-wise it's firmly in the upper midrange category, we were actually charged far less than their published walk-in rates below. They’re spic and span and well-appointed with all the mod-cons you’d expect at the prices: cable TV, minibar, free tea and coffee, efficient air-con and clean bathrooms with toiletries and hot showers. Strand has a spacious lobby with very helpful and friendly English-speaking staff. There's a well-stocked bar and restaurant plus a rather good buffet breakfast is included in the room rate. They also offer free WiFi, though not unusually for Burma, it didn't work when we visited. Superior rooms are really a good deal for Mawlamyine while the more expensive deluxe option offers larger rooms on higher floors, so with better views. They also have spacious family rooms, called ‘royal deluxe’, which would be suitable for a couple plus two or three kids.

Check booking agent rates or deals on their own website and if in doubt turn up and ask for a discount. At the end of the day though, unless you count Attran’s front-row bungalows, this is the only upper-end option in town.
