The place to stay in Ye
No licenses for tourist accommodation were issued until late 2013 and one of the first in Ye was presented to the American-Burmese couple who established Starlight.
This was a wise move by the authorities, since a jolly good job they’ve made of it too. This small lakeside spot has set good standards with clean, comfortable rooms, reasonable prices, helpful service, plenty of local information, motorbike hire and a friendly, cosy vibe.
The only drawback is that they have a grand total of six rooms. In high season 2015-16 they were full pretty much every day, so do make sure you call in advance.
Rooms are simply decorated and nothing flashy, but they are clean and more than adequate, with attached hot water bathrooms. You can flip on the air-con or just stick to a fan for 10,000 kyat less. The rooms do vary. One comes without windows, some have a lake view and there’s a spacious twin room, but for simplicity’s sake rates are kept the same and it’s all on a first-come basis. The free WiFi is as ropey as everywhere else in these parts but other services include free maps and plentiful local information as well as new Hondas for rent at 7,000 kyat per day, a decent rate.
The building is small but they still manage to squeeze in a couple of tables on an upstairs terrace where you can gaze over the lake while taking your included breakfast. A communal seating area downstairs has a well stocked fridge, but most of the evening action when we stayed seemed to take place on the guesthouse doorstep.
When we stayed in early 2016, the owners had plans to relocate to a larger spot just outside of town. There would not be any guarantee that potential new owners would continue Starlight’s guesthouse format, so keep an eye on their very good website for future developments.
Starlight is a short walk from most of Ye’s sights and places to eat; a moto-taxi from the station or highway bus stops should set you back 1,000 kyat.
