Though it’s French-Burmese owned, rather pricey Coconut Guesthouse has a rather Thai style, with chalets set in a garden and a wooden decked seating area with low tables and cushions.

The well run, friendly and comfy guesthouse’s only problem is it’s not actually on the beach. It’s located 500 metres back off the road between the beach and village so it’s not an insurmountable distance, and it does make it peaceful away from the vendors and beer stations, but it is a slight shame.

The entrance is a short distance down a dirt track off the road and there’s a choice of wooden or concrete chalets spaced around a well-maintained garden. Rooms are simple. They lack air-con, hot water and WiFi (you should be able to pick it up in their restaurant though), but are otherwise comfortable enough. All have ensuite bathrooms. We did nevertheless baulk at their rates -- a double without air-con, hot water or inclusive breakfast for $35 is not the best value in Dawei. Nevertheless, it is very popular – full when we visited – probably due to it being the only option around with that relaxed Thai style, cushions on the floor, banana pancakes... Beachside Maungmagan Resort is better value, we think.

The service is friendly enough, with onward tickets available and motorbike hire and massage services. Bikes are a rather steep 10,000 kyat per day or 15,000 for a 24-hour period. Massage is a more reasonable 5,000 per hour. Parami’s tour and rental spot just around the corner had them for 9,000 kyat with reductions available if you took one for a few days.

We were quoted high season rates and though they hadn’t set low season ones yet, what would you do at the beach in a town with one of the highest rainfalls in the country during the monsoon?
