As the name implies, this resort is smack on the beach though on a quieter stretch north of the busiest section.

It makes for a good all round option if you prefer staying by the sea instead of in town.

The resort has a reputation for being orientated towards local tourists and while it lacks the ‘guesthouse’ set up, the English-speaking staff are welcoming and helpful -- and the rooms are a decent deal. Indeed this was one of the few accommodation options we came across in the region which published identical rates for foreigners and locals. (If we understand correctly, hotels have to pay extra for a license for foreign guests therefore feel they should charge them extra.)

Maungmagan Beach Resort may not compare with resorts in neighbouring Thailand, either in terms of professionalism or value for money – tourism is new here – but for Burma this represents a very good deal. The beach is local style and can get a bit hectic over weekends with vendors, inner-tube renters and picnicking families, but it’s several kilometres long and the neighbouring ones are pristine. Parami up the road towards the village has motorbikes for rent so this makes for a great base to explore the coast. Of course, in the evenings, once the daytrippers have gone, it’s a peaceful spot.

Accommodation is in unimaginative rows of white-painted one-storey concrete blocks, though front row ones where you can gaze at the beach and ignore the identikit rows behind you are pleasant. Interiors are well maintained and comfortable without being luxurious. Each room comes with a small balcony, though again if you’re in a middle row you’ll be two metres from the room opposite. Interiors are all similar with spartan decoration but TV, air-con, fridge and ensuite hot water bathrooms. (They didn’t offer WiFi but you could try at reception if you’re desperate.)

Their restaurant has an air-con enclosed section and tables on a lawn out front. Considering the location we found their prices for the seafood-heavy Burmese/Thai options reasonable. The inclusive buffet breakfast was pretty good too. At busy times they’ll get a barbecue going on the lawn. Being west facing, it’s a delightful spot for a sundowner.
