Excellent budget spot
Taking up three floors above a stationery store, Sun is a cosy and comfortable little guesthouse with clean, good value rooms.
This is a good spot and recommended if your budget doesn’t quite stretch to midrange neighbour Grand Jade.
Though far from huge, its rooms are air-con and the hot showers work. It’s too small for much room decoration but the beds are comfortable, bedside lamp worked and the new duvets were welcome with the early morning ocean chill. Staff varied from helpful with good English to incompetent but they did all try. There’s a tiny communal area plus fridge in reception, with a small balcony overlooking the the busy street below. Asking for a rear-facing room may be a good idea if you’re a light sleeper. Good Myeik maps are provided free of charge, ticketing is available and motorbikes are for hire. They asked for 7,000 kyat a day but if you enquire directly at the motorbike shop downstairs you should get it a bit cheaper. WiFi was rubbish but Grand Jade is a two-minute walk away.
Particularly good are their breakfasts, taken in a fourth floor cafe area. Orders for local-style breakfasts are taken in the evening and mornings they send a staff member down to the market to buy the meals. Head up to the fourth floor in the morning and they’ll pop your choice into the microwave. It’s a good system and their selection of local style rice, noodle and soup dishes are excellent. If that’s too much out of your breakfast comfort zone then there’s always fruit and bread and jam.
