The Taan Taan Ta is in a busy part of Pathein, located just across the street from the central market.
The receptionist is very friendly, speaks English very well and is able to provide helpful advice about the city. Rooms are cheap, old, grungy and in an overall poor condition. The walls beg for a fresh coat of paint and the bathrooms need an intense scrubbing. But if you're able to rough it out, you'll enjoy some of the lowest room rates in town. The small TV, with just one channel, sometimes shows football matches and movies in English, but will leave you feeling blue when the Burmese monk prayer show is on. There's no WiFi but an internet cafe is nearby. No on-site restaurant or breakfast is offered, but several delicious Burmese restaurants and tea houses are very close. This is a great choice for backpackers on a tight budget. Those with a little extra cash to spend should head to nearby Pammawaddy Hotel.
