Garden Guesthouse is a classically Southeast Asian-style hotel, a very welcome find in the unlikely location of a Kompong Chhnang back street. We’re not sure if the very friendly and welcoming local family running the guesthouse hit on the formula by accident or if they made a study of popular provincial Thai guesthouses of the 1990s, but from the agreeable garden setting through to its simple affordable bamboo cafe and spotlessly clean, comfy rooms, they got it just right.

Garden’s located among the rows of residential streets that stretch south of the provincial hall so it’s peaceful, with several restaurants close by, and only a kilometre or so to the taxi station and Phsar Leu. If that’s not quiet enough, the guesthouse is actually set back from the road as well. As you enter the driveway, reception is on your left and their cafe on your right, after which a long, thin garden area punctuates a somewhat eclectic selection of rooms.

First up is the main two-storey building with a wooden upper floor containing a wide balcony and their fan rooms; the first choice options are in a row of single storey, green painted rooms at the rear of the site. In between is another two-storey house with slightly dingier, overflow rooms.

Exteriors offer small balconies and more plants while interiors are immaculate and cosy. We counted five rooms in this small block and all come with WiFi, air-con and ensuite hot water showers. Floors are white tiled, walls are white painted, with flowery curtains and some Angkor kitsch providing a bit of colour. Though not large, they manage to squeeze a desk and chair in next to the decently sized beds. Cheaper but less attractive fan rooms are available in the main building.

Plenty of chill out spots scattered around the garden.

The owner speaks fine English and provides a wealth of local advice as well as ticket and transport assistance, plus they have bicycles and motorbikes for rent at $1 and $10 per day respectively.

Breakfast is not included but the bamboo-fronted cafe area offers teas, coffees, eggs and baguette or fried noodles or rice for a few bucks. This is an all-round top spot; we wish every provincial Khmer town had a Garden Guesthouse.
