Daunkeo fits the typical Cambodian provincial guesthouse model, with an original house/villa set in a courtyard supplemented by newer adjacent room blocks and a separate restaurant area.

Rooms are unspectacular but reasonably well-maintained and comfortable enough for a night or two. Rooms vary in size, with ground floor ones gloomier and upper storey ones brighter with balconies. Several cheaper fan-cooled versions available too. Small, dingy fan rooms are on offer for the budget conscious for a knock-down $6 or $8 single and double.

Smart and modern offerings.

The default offering is an air-con ground floor room with ensuite bathroom, hot shower, cable TV; ours came with a fridge too. Decor was basic but there was a wardrobe and table and chairs, and it was clean enough, though we did have to ask for some mozzie spray. For an extra $10, larger, brighter, newer VIP rooms are found in an adjacent building. WiFi worked in our room but we wouldn’t guarantee that throughout.

Staff members are helpful and friendly enough and are happy to arrange transport for you in the form of tuk tuks, boats or taxis. (Transport rates are comparable with elsewhere.) Breakfast is not included but an on-site restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as offering cold beer and even a couple of cocktails. The interior is quite smart for a guesthouse, with solid wooden furniture and cotton napkins, and prices are very reasonable. You’ll also find a couple of tables set in the garden, creating a more communal feel than most other town guesthouses.

Daunkeo even in theory offer guests a few bicycles, ideal for exploring the area, though when we visited they were all unfortunately out of action. The hotel’s location on the eastern waterfront road (officially Street 9) is good, just a short walk from the boats, restaurants, coffee shops and Phsar Nat. Daunkeo Guesthouse is a good deal, but it’s popular with local travellers, so call ahead to ensure a bed in advance.
