Malibu Bungalow’s cute chalets have been around for a while, perched in their prime spot atop the rocky headland at the southern end of Sokha Beach, but as it had just come under new ownership and management when we last visited our review is admittedly on the provisional side.

The rocky promontory divides Serendipity from Sokha and while a footpath links to the latter the main entrance and driveway are to be found on the left side of the right angle where Sokha Beach Road meets the beach itself. That stretch of beach is open to the public while Serendipity Beach Road’s bars and cafes are a short, but badly lit, walk away down the hill. (There have been robberies in the area in the past so be careful after dark.) The chalets are separated by steps, boulders and well-maintained, lush tropical flora so the setting is top-notch with the surrounding rocks and trees keeping any Ochheuteal noise down and the stilt bungalow balconies affording delightful sea views.

The resort has been built in two stages, with aforementioned wooden chalets stretching between the road and the beach and a row of less attractive, concrete rooms above the road. The bungalows are well-designed and solidly built. Interiors are equally well-designed with lots of varnished wood, crisp white walls and come with air-con, fridges, mosquito nets, WiFi, safety deposit boxes, TVs and ensuite bathrooms with hot showers.

The motel-style rooms on the far side of the road lack sea views but are simply yet well-decorated sporting sparse but rich furnishings and calming hues. Each one comes with a car-parking space so we’d assume these are designed for local guests or well-heeled Phnom Penh expats.

The restaurant and cafe area behind reception is also well-situated though we’re not sure yet what offerings they intend to propose to guests. Staff members tried to be helpful and were certainly friendly albeit visibly frustrated by communication problems with the Chinese owner. We do hope they get things sorted out as this is a top-spot and rates not excessive for the delightful chalets on offer. Personally, we found it far more attractive than the concrete blocks and hordes of tourists down on Sokha Beach itself.
