No matter how many photos of former celebrity guest Jacqueline Onassis the Independence Hotel sticks on the walls there’s not a lot they can do about the basic 1960’s hotel block itself.

The original, 8-storey building was built without balconies and surrounding tree growth now blocks the views of all rooms lower than the 5th floor. Decor and facilities are similar to any standard, generic mid-range hotel so you’re expected to gloss over the balcony-less and unimaginatively decorated rooms and dwell instead on the accompanying details such as the History Lounge bar, large pool area and aforementioned, elaborate lobby area.

However what we did like were their excellent, newly added pavilions situated down the slope from the main building, which do have wonderful sea views as well as access to an also recently constructed, magnificent infinity pool built into the rocks along the water’s edge. This is almost two different resorts—certainly in style—though unfortunately in price range too. Most of the array of room categories listed below are combinations within these two-storey waterfront pavilions with villas and suites providing individual chalets. It’s a two-minute walk between the two sections of the hotel, but they’re a world apart.

An overall feature we liked is the great setting, with the hotel placed at the summit of a hill amid an extensive and luxuriant, tropical forest park. Birdlife and macaques abound and it certainly creates a secluded and tranquil environment. The wooded headland upon which Independence is situated is actually half way between the beach of the same name and Hawaii Beach and as with nearby Sokha Beach, the location’s name is derived from the hotel rather than vice versa.

Perhaps on a good day you could admire the period charm and retro chic of the old hotel while the new additions are classy by any standards. Their low season rates aren’t that bad and we did notice considerable discounts available from online booking agents so if tranquillity and a natural setting are important criteria then it may be worth a splurge and that pool is good!
