Many travellers miss out on spotting Makara Bungalows thanks to its location, tucked down at the far end of Occheuteal beach, and its lack of advertising. It might be priced a touch above your average budget backpacker guesthouse, but it’s worth the extra few dollars if you’re looking to get away from the crowds.
Not only is this one of the cheapest places in Sihanoukville with a pool, but it’s also within easy walking distance of the beach. The guesthouse grounds, with rooms set around the non-chlorinated, chemical-free pool, have a soothing feel to them and if you’re looking for a respite from your backpacking travels, you could easily wind up spending your whole day lounging around ordering daiquiris and mojitos from the bar.
The rooms are immaculate and well furnished with a TV, refrigerator, in-room safe, desk, chair and mirror. Matching linens are clean and high quality and, along with the dark curtains and comfy mattress, should ensure you a restful sleep.
Makara also offers a number of added services such as free beach mats for guests, laundry service, scooter rentals, and internet services with complimentary computers. If you ask at the reception area, they will arrange tours and bus travel tickets with a hotel pick up for you. They also have a large parking area patrolled by security at night, so no worries if you are bringing your own vehicle.
It’s just a two-minute moto ride to the busier areas of Occheutuel beach and the Golden Lions roundabout, which makes it an ideal spot if you like to party, but prefer your sleeping accommodation to be in a calm and quiet locale. Overall Makara represents good value for what’s on offer.
