Many travellers miss out on Makara Bungalows due to its location—tucked away at the far end of Ochheuteal beach—but this cute little, low-key resort operation is well worth seeking out.

Although we’d be hard pushed to recall any objectionable Sihanoukville hotel staff, (hello Independence Hotel security), Makara’s crew were exceptionally friendly and even after just a five-minute cup of coffee we’d learnt half the members’ names amid exhortations to “pop by again next time we were passing”.

The set-up is a small cafe to the left, tiny reception area and tour desk to the right and pool straight ahead lined with two single-storey rows of rooms. Not strictly speaking bungalows as such—or terraced ones if you wish—they open front and back so half the rooms look onto the pool with another dozen to the rear. You pay a few dollars more for the pool view and it’s probably worth it to avoid staring at a blank wall. Location is a block back from the beach’s southern end where Ochheuteal’s grid pattern dissolves into routes leading off towards Otres.

Price range is slightly above budget—at the lower scale of flashpacker—but both rooms and services definitely fall into the latter category. Interiors are immaculate and well-furnished with a TV, refrigerator, safe, desk and chair and useful shelf to dump your bag on. Rooms come with small balconies and decor is simple and uncluttered. Cleanliness extends to the pristine bathrooms which could grace many mid-range, let alone flashpacker hotels.

Services include free beach mats for guests, computers for guest use and motorbike hire including Honda Dreams which we couldn’t find anywhere at dedicated in-town hire shops. They also have a helpful tour and ticketing desk while their parking area is patrolled by security at night, so no worries if you are bringing your own wheels.

Makara is a short ride or pleasant stroll to the busier sections of town yet has a peaceful location and cosy feel. Highly recommended and well worth the money.
