A justifiably popular backpacker choice the Monkey Republic hostel comes with a lively bar, good music, an above average restaurant and several options for budget accommodation.

The main building, looking onto the central section of Serendipity Beach Road, houses their spacious cafe downstairs and a chill-out, seating area above. It’s built in a very pleasing neo-colonial style with a veranda replete with balustrades upstairs, wide archways below all finished in classic French tropical yellow.

A pity the classy style doesn’t extend to the rear where you’ll find an ugly three-storey concrete block containing their air-con rooms and a couple of rows of single-storey, smaller but cuter, fan options aside gravel paths and a few token plants. Between the two is an uninspired but popular pool area with loungers and parasols.

They also offer small four and six bed dorms which come with air-con, large personal lockers and hot water showers, while for more privacy you can choose between ensuite fan or air-con rooms. Interiors are simple but clean and comfortable with basic decor. The newly completed air-con dorms are sensibly finished in plain white helping to create an uncluttered feel while the ensuite room we checked came with a beige and Bordeaux colour scheme breaking up the Spartan look.

In the vicinity the same group also run Monkey Maya at Ream and Monkey Island on Koh Rong so we assume the hostel’s popularity is due to punters staying a night or two as they transit from one to another. Location is good, the restaurant is recommended even if you don’t stay here and rooms are fine for a night or so. Service started out in an, “oh no, here’s another tourist asking lots of questions style”, but we did end up with a few smiles in the end.

The whole place burnt to the ground in a 2013 fire which may explain the somewhat cobbled together feel but overall this is a good address. Oh and we nearly forgot; one free beer per person on check-in!
