Despite initial appearances, the Don Bosco Hotel School is both a training school for disadvantaged young locals and a fully functioning and very comfortable 3-star hotel—it represents both a great deal for visitors and a worthy scheme for Sihanoukville.

The Don Bosco Hotel is located in the sprawling grounds of the school of the same name in a walled compound off Omui, (aka Ou-Pram) Street. You will have to pass through the entire compound to reach the actual hotel, located on the far side, and it does all look very municipal admin block or college campus style, (which it is), but the modern hotel itself is well-designed and the interior pleasantly laid out. It is out of the way but you certainly won’t be bothered by any traffic noise and staff can facilitate bicycle or motorbike hire to get you down to Otres or Ochheuteal which they calculate are only some two kilometres away. They also offer a regular free shuttle service as well and can, of course, call you taxis or tuk tuks.

Rooms are housed in a pair of parallel two-storey blocks under which is their spacious restaurant above which you’ll find a large roof terrace. To the right is a garden area with a large, attractively laid out pool and even an outdoor gym. The restaurant is a key element of the school and offers well-prepared and inexpensive local, other Asian and international dishes. There’s a choice of indoor, outside or aforementioned roof terrace seating. Mixology is apparently included in the curriculum so the hotel comes with full bar, wine and cocktail list.

The rooms themselves are of a moderate size and come with simple decor, air-con, ensuite bathrooms, minibars, WiFi, safes and TVs. There are single, king-size, twin and triple options and superior and deluxe versions have small balconies. Terrace rooms open directly onto the pool area and deluxe even come with their own jacuzzis.

Staff members are enthusiastic but they are all learning so don’t expect them to get it right every single time. It’s part of the process, and a generous heart that gives others the space to learn and grow is just as valuable here as the money raised to pay for the students’ training and other valuable supports.

Don Bosco, or John Bosco—or even Saint John Bosco—was a 19th-century Italian priest who dedicated himself to helping poor street kids in his native Turin. He was canonised in 1934 and strangely is now accepted as the patron saint of magicians. You’ll find plenty of info on Google on the man and his work so to cut a long story short the Don Bosco Foundation now runs numerous training schools for underprivileged kids in India, Philippines and the US as well as in Cambodia.

If you’re happy just doing day trips down to the beach this hotel makes an excellent, peaceful, comfortable and very good value base for exploring. Plus of course, it’s all for a good cause.
