We’d propose Wish You Were Here be submitted for UNESCO World Heritage status as a cultural site of historical significance as in many ways it’s a perfect example of late 20th-century backpacker architecture. That’s not a criticism; it’s a well-run and good value spot—just a bit retro.

Ochheuteal’s Onederz represents the new style, ultra-organised budget hostel while an increasing proportion of young western travellers these days expect air-con and ensuite but popular Wish You Were Here (and Otres 2’s Footprints) does show there’s still a market for the old cheap, cheerful and ramshackle style. There are basic but clean dorms upstairs, A-frame chalets out back with shared bathrooms and they’ve recently added a couple of more solid chalets with private bathrooms. There is admittedly less competition now and (extremely helpful) management assured us they’re full most high season days.

Just past the flowery bower entrance gate and fish pond you’ll find yourself in the hostel’s communal hub with reception and a busy, friendly cafe area. Upstairs and behind in an old wooden building they offer dorms and tiny shared bathroom options with a female only dorm slated for high season. Dorms are simple mosquito nets over mattresses on the floor; private rooms are also basic but clean with varnished wood floors and mozzie nets and communal bathrooms appeared well-maintained. The ensuite version is substantially larger with wide king size beds but still a very good deal price-wise.

The bar is a popular spot plus there’s a new coffee shop area and food comes with good reviews so it’ll attract non-residents too and can get very busy plus there are of course happy hour(s) (16:00–22:00) and bar games so it isn’t the place for an early night. Brick chalets to the rear are quieter and there is a balcony area to relax in above the bar but basically, you’ll need to either join in and mix in, bring some earplugs or take your backpack off to Monkey Maya.

This stretch of Otres is, for now, one of the least messed around with and the beach is literally a stone’s throw away so if you’re after a fun, budget option with easy swimming opportunities then WYWH is a good choice. Local staff and foreign management were welcoming and helpful and there’s plenty of travel advice and assistance on hand including snorkelling trips, bike hire and island hopping tours.
