Footprints is about the last backpacker joint left on Otres 2 these days but fortunately, it is a good one with efficient helpful staff, an excellent cafe and a range of accommodation choices from dormitory through to private bungalows.

We guess they’ve had to up their game to cling onto their spot but they appear to have been very successful and Footprints is another address where you’ll need to book well in advance during high season. The overall organisation seems good and western management is helpful and enthusiastic. That said, the guesthouse is a particularly ramshackle, congested affair and accommodation seems almost an afterthought so you wouldn’t stay here for room quality alone. It’s more about the package really; a bustling, convivial scene with like-minded souls and the usual array of backpacker amenities though of course having no immediate competition certainly helps.

Now that is a dorm.

The 22-bed dorm is really a large, open balcony and the wooden construction and beds give it an on-board kind of feel. Lack of walls may help air circulation but the low tin roof must make things a bit sticky in hot season and 22 beds in close proximity is a lot. They do also manage to squeeze a second, 12-bed dormitory in with a more classic four wall and ceiling format but again it’s hardly roomy. There are also private room options in the wooden building behind but again a lot of small rooms with thin walls have been squeezed into a confined area.

Better, though still cheap, choices are the more solid, ground floor rooms with ensuite bathrooms. Interiors at those rates are as simple as you’d expect and largely devoid of decor other than varnished wood. Furniture is scarce, curtains transparent and we saw mosquito nets full of holes—so a few minor tweaks would improve matters particularly as their high season private room tariffs are creeping into the flashpacker budget. We should say, these issues are common budget hostel issues and not unique to Footprints—it’s the overall vibe that makes this place stand-out and if you’re not too fussy about personal space or room details this is a good choice.

The restaurant and bar area is particularly good. The former is convivial and cheap with a huge drinks menu and the latter includes some of the best Indian food in these parts. There’s a spacious bar out front and a comfortable beachside cafe area for dry months plus the usual chill-out, movie section.

If you’re after a cheap bed, proximity to the beach and a party atmosphere then Footprints is a good option for Otres 2.
