Cheesy but exceptional value
Nothing says you’ve made it in Cambodia quite like chopping down an entire forest then carving it up into immense pieces of astonishingly ugly and uncomfortable furniture in adventurous shades of orange/brown.
And on that basis, Vy Chhe has definitely made it; the lobby is simply teeming with such defilements, and the bedroom furniture is in much the same vein. If you’re not a tree-hugger though, we can say that Vy Chhe does represent extraordinary value. The rooms are large and spanking clean, and as you climb higher offer some great views across Battambang. They also come with all the usual mod-cons, even including a bath/Jacuzzi in the higher-priced rooms. After scaling Phnom Banan, this might come as a blessed relief. The staff here are really friendly and helpful, and the easy location and excellent prices make this a good choice for those who like their comforts but may not have the budget for them.

Nicky Sullivan is an Irish freelance writer (and aspiring photographer). She has lived in England, Ireland, France, Spain and India, but decided that her tribe and heart are in Cambodia, where she has lived since 2007 despite repeated attempts to leave. She dreams of being as tough as Dervla Murphy, but fears there may be a long way to go. She can’t stand whisky for starters. She was a researcher, writer and coordinator for The Angkor Guidebook: Your Essential Companion to the Temples, now one of the best-selling guidebooks to the temples.
