Central and cheap
The most central, cheap and convenient of all of the accommodation options, especially for those who don’t have their own transport.
There are few frills, but the rooms are clean if small, with cold water showers, soft mattresses and thin walls — you can hear everything. The cheapest rooms are windowless, and a bit stuffy though not likely so much in December/January when the area is quite cool. Staff can speak English to a point, and may be able to help you find a guide, though were not very helpful when we asked. The hotel is just off the main drag 500 metres west of the Independence Monument roundabout, on the north side of the road.

She has lived in England, Ireland, France, Spain and India, but decided that her tribe and heart are in Cambodia, where she has lived since 2007 despite repeated attempts to leave. She dreams of being as tough as Dervla Murphy, but fears there may be a long way to go. She can’t stand whisky for starters. She was a researcher, writer and coordinator for The Angkor Guidebook: Your Essential Companion to the Temples, now one of the best-selling guidebooks to the temples.
