An unusually good value five-star hotel is how we’d sum up Victoria Angkor Resort and Spa. It may not have all the tiny flourishes and design elements of the world’s leading international five-star properties, but it is fairly priced, especially in low season.

Race you in.

By far one of the loveliest pools in Siem Reap.

The courtyard saltwater pool area competes with the best luxury offerings in Siem Reap, the rooms were refurbished in 2014 and its location cannot be faulted – it’s next door to Raffles overlooking the carefully tended Royal Park Gardens – so we find this high-end yet unpretentious property easy to recommend for those looking to splurge.

Unlike many of the large generic resort properties scattered along National Road 6, Victoria Angkor offers buckets more personality and charm. An old-world feel reigns throughout the property, which makes the build date of 2003 something of a surprise. They aim to recreate the romanticism of the colonial era, when the proper concoction of a G&T and matters of everyday luxury were very serious issues. The result is a beautiful and romantic property, though none of the high-handed stuffiness that this otherwise implies. The staff are attentive, efficient (and plentiful), and also quick to share a little fun.

Families in particular will be attracted by the kids’ facilities which for an unknown reason are something of a rarity elsewhere in Siem Reap. There’s a separate, shallow pool and there’s also a Kids Club for two to 12 year olds.

We like.

Raw romance.

The property may have been faulted by a few in the past for being a bit outdated in style, but recent refurbishments have seen to that. The property is traditional to a T, so if you’re looking for something a little more slick and urban, then check out Shinta Mani Club.

On a tight backpacker budget? Fret not. There are still a couple of ways you can enjoy a taste of the high life at this popular hotel. The first is with their regular happy hour. Sit in the bar or outdoors under the covered veranda and sip half-price cocktails – with live music on Friday nights. Alternatively, during low season, Victoria is renowned for its Sunday pool brunch. US$25 (net) will get you a magnificent buffet brunch along with use of the pool. Get your cheese fix then slowly sink into the bottom of the pool. Bliss.
