Magnificent traditional houses
Wow, just wow! We are officially in the market for a sugar-daddy, so we can move into Villa Campuhan full time. This magnificent hotel’s six large traditional houses sprawl around an extensive coastal tropical garden at Jasri beach, next door to Turtle Bay Hideaway.
To be honest the rates here are a little out of range of the usual Travelfish radar, but when those lottery numbers come up, this is the place to go in Bali.
Imagined by designer Linda Garland and pulled-off by a team of Sumatran master carpenters, four of the houses are designed in the style of traditional Minangkabau palaces encircling a large lotus pond. The other two are in a Balinese style. We prefer the Minangkabau style houses, simply for their unique look. This is traditional Indonesian craftsmanship at its finest.
We don’t gush that often, but Villa Campuhan seems more like a film set than reality — to quote a comment from their guest book it’s “Disneyland-for-grownups”. However Disneyland-like it may be, Villa Campuhan is no generic luxury resort.
The largest house, Villa Agung, was featured in Architectural Digest’s Exotic Homes Edition in 2009. Built from recycled ironwood electrical poles, one large building serves as a communal living and dining room — open to the ocean and mountains and towering above the oceanfront infinity swimming pool. The over-scale rooms feature a fascinating collection of Indonesian art and artefacts, antiques and textiles — a collectors’ paradise. With hand-hewn teak or ironwood floors and eight-metre high ceilings they are truly something special.
Of course this five-star resort comes with everything you would expect in the way of amenities and comfort, but far exceeds the usual for its authenticity and originality.
Breakfast is included, and lunch and dinner are available at an additional cost. The team of chefs can whip up whatever you desire — no request is too small or too large. Enjoy in Villa Champuhan, the largest villa open to the sea and mountains that serves as the communal dining room, with large round table for you to share in the Indonesian, Balinese and Western cuisine from the menu.
There are good surf breaks nearby, but the ocean directly in front of Villa Campuhan is unsafe for swimming. Pretty Virgin Beach with white sand and good snorkelling is a short drive away.
Villa Campuhan is an ideal honeymoon destination, or a great place for a group of friends to share a special event. It’s easy to fall in love with, and really will knock your socks off.

Sally spent twelve years leading tourists around Indonesia and Malaysia where she collected a lot of stuff. She once carried a 40kg rug overland across Java. Her house has been described as a cross between a museum and a library. Fuelled by coffee, she can often be found riding her bike or petting stray cats. Sally believes travel is the key to world peace.
