With truckloads of charm and ocean views from several rooms, Pondok Pisces boasts a bunch of character-filled traditional cottages and bungalows amid lovely gardens perched over Balian Beach as well as a sister property, Balian Riverside Sanctuary, by the river behind the beach itself.

This simple friendly place fosters a tremendously relaxed ambience with five rooms at Pondok Pisces and seven by the river (where there is also a swimming pool), offering options from tiny bungalows that sleep one up to large houses that accommodate four, each is unique and affords its own charms and quirks.

As we are suckers for a sea view, we’d be quick to nab one of the rooms at Pondok Pisces itself, however others may prefer the more secluded riverside location where rooms also offer more space, though some here are starting to look tired and could do with a bit of maintenance, they are appealing nevertheless.

Single travellers will be happy to learn that rates are scaled to the number of room occupants, where most hotels charge you extra for three, here they also charge you less for one. Most rooms are fan-cooled with windows that open to let the breeze flow and mosquito netted beds to keep the critters at bay, with the exception of the air-con Beach House and all options provide hot-water bathrooms, many of the lovely outdoor variety.

Standard amenities include a mini-fridge, safe, tea-making facilities, and Aqua gallon for drinking water with some rooms adding TVs and kitchenettes. Furnishings are comfortable with a somewhat boho hippy-style and all enjoy outdoor seating and cosy spots to relax. A jungle-like setting shades the delightful small swimming pool at Balian Riverside Sanctuary and the dappled light makes the jewel like waters even more inviting—pull up a sun lounge, grab a book and while away a lazy afternoon.

If you prefer your water view with a little more action, move by the river where another bunch of lounges allow you to lie back and watch the local fishermen. When you feel peckish, wander back to Pondok Pisces where Tom’s Garden Cafe offers a range of local and Western fare, and on a Friday evening fires up the coals for a barbecue feast, worth stopping by at this excellent seaside cafe for a meal even if you are not a guest. Room rates include a buffet breakfast served in the cafe.

Pondok Pisces offers tours, transport, motorbike rental and massages too. Pondok Pisces our first choice in Balian, we love the homely laid-back vibe here despite a few foibles, and so do many others—this is a popular spot and wise to book ahead. If they are fully booked, Istana Balian harbours some comfortable options or you may like the sweet Balian Princess Villas and if you have plenty of the folding stuff Pondok Pitaya is a winner.
