The road leading to the Botanic Gardens is the place to head for backpacker digs.

Pelangi Homestay, closest to the gardens, is slightly less spartan than the other offerings along this street, though that’s not saying much.

The budget longhouse-style rooms here are the ones to go for, even though the more expensive bungalows look better from the outside (they’re not on the inside). If you have a slightly larger fistful of cash, you’re better off heading to Melati Homestay 2 north of Pura Unun Danau Bratan.

Pelangi Homestay’s small, simple tiled rooms offer a bed with a foam mattress, a bottom sheet and a blanket. We recommend you bring a sleep sheet as cleanliness is questionable. Niceties include fresh painted walls, decorative Balinese carvings and a tiny TV with local channels. A bedside table and built-in shelves provide a spot for your belongings. There’s a power outlet by the bed, but no lamp, however the light switch is conveniently located close to the bed (yet inconveniently located when you enter the room).

Ensuite bathrooms provide a flushing throne, and one-temperature-suits-all hot-water shower (it can be adjusted with a bit of a climb to reach the hot-water heater). Don’t look too closely for grime, patterned tiles hide most. In a rather Faulty Towers moment we reported a “Siberian hamster” in our bathroom, only to be told that was impossible and that we had imagined it! (Don’t worry they can’t get in apparently).

A small balcony offers a chair outside some rooms, but mostly is unfurnished. The attached restaurant has one of the least expensive menus around, and beer is cheaper than the shops. A simple breakfast and WiFi are included. For all its faults, Pelangi Homestay isn’t a bad budget option, and the friendly family are happy to chat and offer local advice. Online deals are cheaper than walk-in rates, so check first. If the budget rooms at Pelangi Homestay are full, try Cirta Ayu or Melati Homestay 1 along the same road.
