Perched atop the cliffs above Balangan Beach a few minutes walk to the sand, Balangan Sea View Bungalow does as described, and as well as offering sea view lumbung-style bungalows surrounding an inviting swimming pool, a range of good value regular style rooms are up for grabs as well.

The cheapest rooms sit about the reception area and enjoy the best outlook, but unsurprisingly these fan-cooled and cold shower rooms were fully booked when we came by. They’re styled like a longhouse cottage, but built on the rooftop. The red-brick, thatched building houses a handful of twin or double rooms each furnished with a semi-private terrace (rooms two and three looked to have the best views). Interiors are not huge, but adequate with mozzie-netted beds and the exposed brick continuing to the inside with the thatch ceiling visible too. We were unable to view the bathroom so can’t report on cleanliness here, but other styles of rooms were very clean.

Superior rooms occupy an adjacent double-storey longhouse and if you are quick to nab the end room on the upper floor here you’ll score a view as well. These twins and doubles come in two flavours—fan-cooled or with air-con and both provide hot-water bathrooms. Tiled rooms are a good size, and light filled with dark heavy wooden furniture that counts mozzie-netted four-poster beds, bedside tables and a sideboard as well as a small fridge. They are very comfortable with decent mattresses (better in the air-con rooms) and linens, but the style is a tad dated. Ensuites are clean, but uncharming wet-style and basic, with the shower and toilet together in one big room. Furnished terraces catch the sea breeze and room one at the top enjoys its own private bamboo bale (be extra quick!).

The double-storey wood, bamboo and thatch lumbung rooms were also fully occupied on our recent visit, but we have inspected them previously. The air-con bungalows harbour a double bed on the lower level and two singles on the upper, all with mozzie nets and with both rooms opening to balconies. Rooms are accessed separately, which is perhaps not ideal if you have young kids and the hot-water bathrooms are situated such that guests get wet if they need to go to the toilet when it’s raining. Two larger family bungalows are outfitted with an internal staircase to connect the two floors, and have the bathroom inside, so if you have young kids in tow, these are the better option.

A freeform pool and plenty of shade make this a good choice for families.

Palm and frangipani edge the swimming pool, lovely for a splash about with a separate kids section and a decent number of umbrellaed sun lounges and beanbags. A grassy area at the end of the pool provides kids with a small running space—note that this is a relatively family-friendly resort, so if you are looking for a kid-free romantic escape, Balangan Sea View Bungalows is not for you. Breakfast is not included in the rate, but is available at the onsite restaurant.

Overall Balangan Sea View Bungalow feels a little out of date, but is clean and well maintained and still offers solid value, plus the location is excellent. A little away from the ocean, but literally around the corner, Flower Bud 2 Bungalows has slightly more appeal but the cute thatch cottages here are mostly fan-cooled only, alternatively Milo’s Home is a good option. Or for a bit more of a spend, families may enjoy La Joya and romantic couples the secluded La Cabane.
