Smack in the thick of the action on the main road at Padang Padang, Padang Padang Inn offers smart modern hotel-style rooms in a triple-storey block overlooking a lovely pool area with sea glimpses from the upper floors and a decent cafe-style restaurant attached.

The hotel is an entire rebuild of an older property and not all was complete when we visited in June 2018, with the rooftop bar (or perhaps yoga studio—staff were not sure), still to be finished. Bright, spotless and comfortable air-con cooled rooms are smallish, but the large picture windows offer the illusion of space and they are far from cramped.

Tasteful modern styling in the tiled rooms employs a pallet of pale greys and whitewood finishes. Beds sport thick mattresses and snowy linen with lighting, built-in tables, and power outlets all close to hand. Facilities are limited with only a small flatscreen TV with cable channels—we didn’t see a safe nor a minibar or a kettle which we would have expected at this price point. Desk, luggage storage and a bench with washbasin are all built into the main part of the room with an opaque glass panel screening the small modern ensuite. The all-black tiled bathroom features a hot-water rainfall shower with ample space for hanging your towel and a small shelf for your bits and bobs as well as liquid soap and shampoo dispensers (although none near the washbasin) and as with the main room is very clean.

A couple of beanbags on the private balcony add pops of colour to the neutral rooms, a perfect spot to check the distant waves if you score a Deluxe room or contemplate the ripples in the swimming pool for folks in the Standard rooms. The sparkly turquoise pool is long enough for a short lap with a kids’ shallow section to the side. Wooden decking offers loungers, seating and shady umbrellas with easy access to the cafe for a cool drink or a poolside coffee. A simple breakfast is included, served in their modern open-styled Dunki Tales Cafe. Make sure you’re here later in the day too, as it is a perfect spot for a sundowner.

Staff are friendly with good English, but we found them to be a little vague. If you’re after a comfortable sleep in a simple clean space this is a decent well-designed choice, but if you prefer a bit of character and a more resort feel, check out Pinkcoco Hotel across the road or Mule Malu at Bingin Beach or for a basic old-school option and a lesser spend, Kenanga Inn up the road is a bit tired but clean.
