Made Roejas Homestay might be a bit under two kilometres from the beach, but this cute little place is excellent value and you’ll probably get a better nights sleep here than at the pricier basic shacks on the seashore.

Although set back from the main road, you can’t miss this homestay, painted in screaming orange within a small walled garden. Along with the vivid paint job, the brick longhouse is decorated with masks, sculptures and dangly dreamcatchers. The modest clean interiors are no less colourful, with lime green painted walls, brightly coloured traditional art and a technicolour dreamcoat of mismatched bedding—football club logo meets batik meets roses in the room we saw (sunglasses optional). Besides the garish but comfy bed, the air-con tiled room provides a lockable wardrobe with a very no-frills cold-water bathroom. The tiled ensuite is scrubbed clean but is a bit of a tight squeeze and though it has a Western throne, it’s bucket flush with the tiny washbasin in the main room.

Outside the rooms the communal terrace is divided by open barriers to create a personal space in front of each, furnished with wooden tables and chairs. The owner is very welcoming, with good English and can help with transport and other needs. Breakfast isn’t included in the rate but Made operates a pleasant open-style cafe 15 metres away on the main road serving simple Western and Indonesian fare and cold Bintang (perhaps not for breakfast). Also less than 100 metres in either direction are Cafe La Passion and The Alchemist, both with excellent Western menus and swimming pools that you can lounge around in all day.

If you would prefer a hot shower, Balangan Garden Bungalows is another good value spot a further 500 metres closer to the beach and adds a small pool or a further 500 metres away from the beach, Paranyogan Homestay is a smarter and more modern pick.

Down on the cliff, Balangan Sea View Bungalow is slightly pricer but a very good option too with a range of rooms. A multitude of bamboo shacks, mostly with share cold-water facilities, line the shore but all we viewed were more of a spend than Made’s and although you can step out the door to the sand, none enjoy a view from the room. But if that’s all you need, Indah Warung and The Fins Nerni offer some of the cleaner rooms on offer.
