Mule Malu had opened its doors just three days prior to our visit in June 2018, and this stylish relaxed midranger offers yet another terrific option to the excellent choices set back, off Bingin clifftop.

Located in the village, a ten-minute walk to the beach, a handful of duplex and triplex brick bungalows surround a sparkling freeform swimming pool within a grassy lawn—the palm trees will be guaranteed to sway as soon as they are established to complete the tropical cliché.

Rooms are spacious and comfy.

Air-con rooms are spacious, airy and light–filled and feature high ceilings and a comfortable and calming decor echoing colours of the beach with pale cement walls and floors, wood and rattan furnishing and natural linen drapes (lined to block the light). Textiles in shades of turquoise and blue hint at the colour of the waves a short walk away. Each room is individually styled but all are decked out with open bathrooms and furnished private terraces.

The friendly Italian owner commented that they are not just about having good-looking rooms and that they care about sleep quality (and the environment) too—walls and ceilings are insulated to keep temperatures cool and reduce the need for air-con as well as keeping sound at bay and beds sport quality mattresses, pillows and linens. Showers are solar heated and waste water is treated and cleaned before it’s washed away to prevent the water table becoming too contaminated, and we were pleased to see glass water bottles in the rooms too.

Rooms offer two sizes, the larger with a daybed that can sleep an extra bod and rooms are spacious enough to fit an extra bed at this family-friendly place. Baby cots are free and there’s plenty of space for kids to run about on the lawn as well. The pool is a decent size and shady umbrellas and ample deckchairs provide a spot to relax poolside, or grab a coffee or glass of wine from the open-style restaurant.

Breakfast will be included in the rate, although when we visited they were still setting up the kitchen, but there’s always coffee! Staff seem keen, friendly and eager to please. Mule Malu is directly behind Casa Asia Italian restaurant, with the entrance a further 50 metres down the road.

We love the seaside vibe at Mule Malu, but if you’d actually like to be beside the sea, you’ll need to spend a little more for digs as stylish as this: The Temple Lodge is our top pick and Mick’s Place and Mu are also both worth considering. If you don’t plan to spend time in your room, and a cliff edge infinity pool is more of a draw, the basic lodgings at Kembang Kuning may fit the bill, or head down to the beach to Adi’s Bungalows.
