For low-budget travellers or those at the end of a long trip who have, well, just run out of cash, Belong Bunter Homestay has the cheapest rooms we found on the Bukit—but is by no means the most basic third-rate option.

This friendly joint provides all you need—a bed, a shower and a roof over your head, in reasonably clean, basic rooms housed in two simple brick long-house blocks set in a sparse but pleasant garden. According to their website Belong Bunter Homestay also offer wooden lumbung-style bungalows, but we were neither shown these nor saw them on the property (perhaps they are in a different section).

No-frills interiors are cooled with a less-than-efficient-looking small wall fan, yet the tiled floors keeps things reasonably cool and the small windows can be opened for a bit of fresh air (pack a mozzie net). Rooms are equipped with decent beds with a bit of bounce, clean linen (with a top sheet to boot), a bedside table and even a bit of traditional art of the wall. Ensuite bathrooms provide modern Western toilets and cold-water showers with a small washbasin and mirror in the main room. Frankly, all is a tad tired and could do with a deep clean, but if you are not fussed by such trivialities, this is a decent value offer.

Rooms enjoy semi-private terraces decked out with a couple of chairs offering the opportunity for a natter on the porch with your neighbours or the friendly staff, although their English is limited. Obviously at this price point Belong Bunter Homestay isn’t beachfront (even the spartan beachfront shacks we viewed were pricier), instead it is tucked away in a small lane off the main road, less than a kilometre from the waves. Breakfast is not included, but Padang Padang Breeze is just around the corner and other food options are a short walk away.

All in all, this is not a bad deal, but if you are looking for a bit more colour and cleanliness with your basic homestay pick, Made Roejas Homestay at Balangan is a few thousand rupiah more, but certainly won’t break the bank and dorms at Kiki Homestay in Uluwatu are of a friendly funky vibe. Belong Bunter Homestay have a second branch (BB 2) with air-con rooms, but we though the location was a little remote and better options are available elsewhere.
